Ann Briggs: Obasanjo Didn’t Treat Tinubu the Way He’s Treated Fubara

In a powerful video shared on Symfoni TV, renowned Human Rights and Niger Delta Environmental Activist Ann-Kio Briggs drew attention to the similarities between President Bola Tinubu’s time as Lagos State governor and the present situation facing Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara.
Briggs pointed out the clear difference in how Tinubu was treated by former President Olusegun Obasanjo during his tenure as Lagos governor, compared to how Tinubu, now as president, is handling the Rivers State crisis. She emphasized that despite Tinubu’s strong opposition to Obasanjo’s policies, he eventually secured significant federal support.
“When Tinubu was governor of Lagos State, Obasanjo didn’t treat him the way Tinubu is treating Fubara today,” Briggs remarked. “Tinubu fought Obasanjo fiercely, but eventually, all the funds owed to him were paid, and he got what he wanted.”Briggs’ comparison is noteworthy in light of Nigeria’s political history, suggesting that Tinubu’s experience as a governor who successfully resisted federal interference while maintaining state independence should influence his current approach to managing federal-state relations.
Political observers have noted that this comparison raises important questions about how federal-state relationships have evolved in Nigeria’s democracy. The parallels between Tinubu’s past battles and his current leadership role offer insight into the recurring patterns in Nigerian politics.Briggs’ comments have sparked fresh debates about political consistency and the duties of those in federal leadership positions.
By referencing Tinubu’s journey from governor to president, Briggs highlighted the significance of historical context in shaping responses to contemporary political challenges. This perspective adds a new layer to the discussion on federal involvement in state matters, suggesting that personal history and past experiences should play a role in guiding current political decisions at the highest levels of government.
