Peter Obi Urges Super Eagles to Gear Up for Rematch Against Libya
Peter Obi, the former Labour Party presidential candidate, has urged the Super Eagles to prepare for a rematch against Libya after the team’s difficult experience at a Libyan airport last Sunday. The Nigerian players and officials found themselves stranded for hours, without food or internet access, prior to their Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier against Libya’s Mediterranean stadium.
In a post on X, Obi expressed his sympathy for the team’s struggles and praised their commitment and patience despite the unfair treatment they received. He encouraged the players to not let this incident affect their motivation, but instead to use it as fuel to win the match and secure a spot in the Morocco 2025 AFCON.
Obi stated: “As a proud Nigerian, I empathize with our Super Eagles regarding their ordeal in Libya while traveling for the Morocco 2025 AFCON Qualifier, which was ultimately canceled by CAF due to the players’ decision not to participate.
The neglect they faced at a remote Libyan airport is unfortunate and validates their choice to return home. While we await CAF’s investigation, I want to commend the players for their patriotism and resilience during this unfair situation.I urge them to not let this unfortunate experience diminish their enthusiasm or spirit.
Instead, let it strengthen their resolve to succeed in the match when it occurs, aiming for qualification for Morocco 2025 AFCON and ultimately to win the tournament. In challenging times like these, when many Nigerians feel disheartened by the state of the nation, each victory by the Super Eagles can unify the country and provide a reason to celebrate.
The distressing situation faced by our national team in Libya should inspire us all to work harder to restore respect and dignity to Nigeria. With strong leadership, Nigeria can rise again. A new Nigeria is indeed possible.”
