Oluseun Anikulapo Kuti, professionally known as Seun Kuti, is a Nigerian musician, singer, and activist born on January 11, 1983, in Lagos State, Nigeria. He is the youngest son of Afrobeat pioneer Fela Anikulapo Kuti and has carried forward his fatherโs musical and political legacy with global impact.
Seun began performing at a very young age and officially took over as the bandleader of Egypt 80โhis fatherโs legendary bandโat the age of 14. Under his leadership, the band has remained a powerful voice for Afrobeat rooted in political consciousness, African unity, and social justice.
He released his debut album Many Things in 2008, followed by critically acclaimed projects such as From Africa with Fury: Rise, A Long Way Beginning, Black Times, and Heavier Yet (Lays the Crownless Head). His music blends traditional Afrobeat with modern influences while maintaining sharp, uncompromising lyrical commentary.
Beyond music, Seun Kuti is known for his outspoken activism, addressing issues such as corruption, police brutality, neo-colonialism, and human rights in Africa. His performances are intense, politically charged, and rooted in African cultural pride.
In 2024, Seun Kuti & Egypt 80 made history by winning a Grammy Award, cementing his position as one of the most important African musicians of his generation and a true torchbearer of Afrobeat.
