JUST IN: Tottenham’s Bentancur Receives 7-Match Suspension for Racist Remarks
Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Rodrigo Bentancur has received a seven-match suspension and a £100,000 fine following a decision by an independent regulatory commission. This punishment comes after Bentancur made racist comments directed at his teammate, Son Heung-min, during a pre-season interview, as reported by various sources.
The Football Association (FA) confirmed the disciplinary action, which will see Bentancur miss domestic matches for the duration of his suspension. Football London highlighted that the charges were related to inappropriate remarks made by the Uruguayan player, which violated FA Rule E3.
Bentancur has been a key figure for Tottenham under manager Ange Postecoglou this season, featuring in all but one of their Premier League games, only sitting out due to a concussion. His absence will leave a significant gap in Postecoglou’s squad as they continue their campaign.
The FA’s statement released on Monday stated: “An independent regulatory commission has imposed a seven-match suspension and £100,000 fine on Rodrigo Bentancur for a breach of FA Rule E3 in relation to a media interview.
“It was alleged that the Tottenham Hotspur midfielder breached FA Rule E3.1 by acting improperly, using abusive and/or insulting language, and bringing the game into disrepute.”
Bentancur’s suspension underscores the FA’s commitment to addressing discriminatory behavior and maintaining respect within the sport.
