Awoniyi’s Nottingham Forest Future in Doubt Following Igor Jesus Arrival
Super Eagles striker Taiwo Awoniyi may face an even more uncertain future at Nottingham Forest following the club’s recent acquisition of Brazilian forward Igor Jesus, according to Soccernet.ng.
Awoniyi, who joined Forest from Union Berlin two years ago, has struggled to find consistent form and fitness at the City Ground. Persistent injuries have limited his impact, and last season, he often found himself playing second fiddle to Chris Wood.
New Zealand international Wood had a standout 2023/24 Premier League campaign, scoring 20 goals and registering three assists in 36 appearances. In contrast, Awoniyi made just 32 appearances in all competitions — mostly as a substitute.
With Nottingham Forest set to compete in the UEFA Conference League, Awoniyi might still get playing time — provided he stays healthy. But the recent signing of Igor Jesus for €11.6 million from Botafogo has intensified the competition in attack.
The 24-year-old Brazilian, who can play as both a central striker and a winger, arrives with an impressive record: 17 goals and six assists in 59 matches for the Brazilian side.
Jesus’ arrival presents a fresh challenge for Awoniyi, who now has to convince head coach Nuno Espirito Santo that he deserves a spot ahead of both Wood and the new recruit. If not, he risks falling to third-choice striker.
This increased pressure may push Awoniyi to consider leaving the club in search of regular football. However, as of now, no club has shown firm interest — likely due to his injury history and inconsistent performances.
With two years remaining on his contract and a current market value of €16 million (according to Transfermarkt), Forest may decide to sell if he fails to make a strong case this season.
Ultimately, the upcoming campaign could be pivotal for Awoniyi — a chance to reignite his Premier League career or the start of a possible exit from Nottingham.
