Why Jonathan Won’t Challenge Tinubu in 2027 – Patience Jonathan Explains
Patience Jonathan, the wife of former President Goodluck Jonathan, has dismissed rumors that her husband may contest against President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in the 2027 presidential election. Speaking candidly, she clarified that the Jonathans have no intention of challenging Tinubu’s leadership, instead pledging support for his re-election bid.
According to a Punch report, Patience Jonathan pointed to the longstanding relationship between their families as a key reason for her stance. She recalled that the Tinubu family stood behind her husband during his 2011 presidential campaign, and now, she believes it’s only right to return that support.
“I cannot abandon my friend in times of need,” she said, emphasizing that friendship and loyalty should not be forgotten in politics.
Beyond political alliances, Patience Jonathan also spoke on a cause she continues to champion—women’s empowerment. She voiced frustration over the repeated rejection of gender equality bills by the National Assembly and reiterated her call for the implementation of 35% affirmative action for women in leadership roles.
Her statements not only affirm her alignment with the Tinubu administration but also highlight her continued advocacy for greater female participation in governance. As Nigeria moves closer to the 2027 elections, her declaration is expected to shape political calculations and alliances, especially within key regions and among women leaders.
Patience Jonathan’s remarks also underscore how deeply personal connections and history influence political decisions in Nigeria, where loyalty often carries as much weight as ideology. Her public backing of President Tinubu may hold considerable sway in political circles and further reshape discussions about the upcoming election cycle.
