Victim Recounts Eruku Church Attack, Says Gunshots Were First Mistaken for Knockouts

A victim of the bandit attack on the Christ Apostolic Church (CAC) in Eruku, Kwara State, Adesuyi Joshua, has described the moment worshippers initially mistook gunfire for knockouts. His account was reported by Vanguard on November 22, 2025.

Joshua said bandits abducted his wife, granddaughter, and about 30 others during the church service. He noted that the congregation first assumed the gunshots were knockouts until the sound intensified, revealing the seriousness of the attack.

He expressed concern over what he described as a slow response from security personnel, stating that soldiers and a police station were nearby but did not intervene while the attack was underway. According to him, police officers only began firing from their gate after they were alerted and attempted to pursue the attackers.

Joshua said, “At first, we thought the gunshots were knockouts, but the sound changed.”
