Dele Momodu: Wike Would Be Politically Irrelevant Without Tinubu’s Support

Prominent journalist and PDP chieftain, Dele Momodu, has openly stated that Nyesom Wike, former Rivers State Governor and now Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, owes his continued political relevance to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
During an interview with Arise TV, Momodu emphasized that without Tinubu’s backing after the 2023 general elections, Wike’s political influence would have rapidly declined. He described Wike’s current stature in national politics as a direct result of the powerful position he now holds—thanks to Tinubu’s intervention.
“Take someone like Nyesom Wike—without Tinubu, he would’ve been irrelevant. Tinubu gave him considerable authority, so it’s only natural he stands or falls with him,” Momodu stated.
He added that Nigerian politics is heavily driven by personal ambition and survival rather than ideology. According to him, many politicians, including Wike, align themselves with those in power as a strategy to remain politically relevant rather than out of loyalty or shared vision.
Momodu also pointed out that Wike’s own presidential ambition remains very much alive, but he has temporarily shelved it, choosing instead to ally with President Tinubu—likely as a calculated move until a better opportunity presents itself.
“His political ambition is as big and fragile as Tinubu’s, but for now, he must shelve it until an opportunity arises,” Momodu concluded.
