Vdm’s Lawyer Says Bail Is Yet To Be Processed Despite Public Announcement

Deji Adeyanju, legal representative of social media activist Martins Otse—popularly known as VeryDarkMan (VDM)—has criticized the delay in his client’s release from EFCC custody, despite reports that bail has been granted.

According to a report by The Punch, Adeyanju said although news broke on Monday that VDM had been granted bail, there has been no official documentation provided by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to initiate his release.

“Bail was granted to VeryDarkMan. But it seems like only a ‘social media bail’ because we have not seen any documents confirming this,” Adeyanju stated. “We have asked the EFCC several times since yesterday to give us the bail papers, but nothing has happened.”

VDM was arrested last week, though the specific reasons for his detention remain undisclosed. Many believe the action may be linked to his outspoken presence and controversial commentary on social media.

Adeyanju emphasized that the legal team is prepared to meet all bail requirements, but progress has been stalled due to the EFCC’s inaction. “We are not refusing any legal steps. We just need them to give us the papers so we can take the next steps. Right now, we are in the dark,” he explained.

The delay has sparked outrage among VDM’s supporters, who have taken to social media with hashtags and posts demanding his release and denouncing the apparent lack of due process.

Adeyanju warned that holding a person in custody after bail has been granted violates legal standards. “This is not how things should work. Once someone is granted bail, they should be released if the right steps are followed,” he added.

As of Tuesday evening, VDM remained in detention, while his legal team continues to demand his immediate release and proper legal procedure from the EFCC.
