Three Men Rescued After Being Trapped in Manhole in Abuja
Three men were rescued after being trapped in a blocked manhole in the Guzape area of Asokoro, Abuja, thanks to the efforts of the Federal Capital Territory Emergency Management Department (FEMD) and other agencies, including the FCT Fire Service and the National Emergency Management Agency.
According to Mr. Abdulrahman Mohammed, acting Director-General of FEMD, the incident occurred when two labourers, who were clearing debris from the manhole to restore the flow to a central sewage system, were suffocated by methane gas buildup that caused an explosion. A third person, a volunteer attempting to help, also got trapped in the manhole.
The three men were rescued and taken to nearby hospitals for treatment, with one receiving care at Wuse General Hospital and the other two at Asokoro District Hospital. Mohammed urged residents to leave public infrastructure maintenance to the appropriate government agencies and praised the emergency responders for preventing a potentially fatal outcome.
