Yemi Alade Reflects on Multicultural Upbringing and Its Impact on Her Music
Lagos — Nigerian Afro-pop artist Yemi Alade has shared how being raised in a household influenced by both Igbo and Yoruba cultures shaped her worldview and artistic expression.
Speaking on the Off The Top podcast hosted by VJ Adams, Alade explained that her upbringing exposed her to a blend of languages, cuisines, and traditional attire from both ethnic groups. She said this multicultural background contributed significantly to her ability to connect with diverse cultures, both within and outside Nigeria.
“I grew up in a household where the food was Igbo and Yoruba at the same time. We were wearing Yoruba native attires and then Igbo sometimes. And then there was Igbo language to the left, there was Yoruba language to the right,” she said.
Alade added that this environment helped broaden her cultural perspective and continues to influence her music and global appeal.
“The entire thing has come together to make me even more special, and it gives me a unique view of culture and tribes,” she said.
