Beyoncé Secures Trademark Rights to Daughter Blue Ivy’s Name After 12-Year Legal Dispute
Beyoncé has officially secured the trademark for her daughter Blue Ivy’s name, ending a 12-year legal battle. The Trademark Official Gazette confirmed the win on December 31, granting the superstar exclusive rights to her daughter’s name.
The legal dispute began in 2012 when Beyoncé and Jay-Z sought to trademark “Blue Ivy” shortly after their daughter’s birth to prevent unauthorized use for commercial purposes. The move faced opposition from Veronica Morales, a wedding planner who had been operating under “Blue Ivy Events” since 2009.
In 2020, the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office ruled in favor of Beyoncé, stating that Morales’ business name and Blue Ivy’s name were not similar enough to cause confusion.
The case faced further delays when a Wisconsin boutique claimed rights to a “Blue Ivy” logo. However, after the boutique failed to challenge Beyoncé’s application, her team advanced the process to its conclusion.
Jay-Z previously defended the trademark effort, telling Vanity Fair in 2013 that it was meant to protect their child’s name from exploitation. “You don’t want anybody trying to profit off your baby’s name,” he explained.
This victory ensures Beyoncé and her family retain full control over Blue Ivy’s name and brand.
