“People Thought I Was Igbo Because I Spoke English” – Actress Mummy K Reflects on Early Acting Days

Nollywood actress Deborah Shokoya, popularly known as Mummy K, has shared an interesting experience from the beginning of her acting career, revealing how her way of speaking once led to a common misconception about her background.
In an interview with WasilaCoded TV, Mummy K was asked whether she faced any form of disrespect early in her career. She explained that she never put herself in situations that would allow people to look down on her.
“I don’t even pass my boundary that would make people underrate me. And at that time, I did communicate in English, so people mistook me for an Igbo girl,” she said.
According to her, the assumption that she was Igbo often worked in her favor, as it led people to treat her with a certain level of respect—perhaps because they didn’t immediately realize she was Yoruba.
“That made them not to trespass, and we all know that some people would come and expect you to respect them. But all those things don’t affect me as a person,” she added.
Mummy K went on to stress that for her, respect is something she both gives and expects in return.
“I respect everyone that comes around me. So, it doesn’t mean anything to me at all,” she concluded.
