SARS Reforms: New Rules to Ensure Better Conduct and Protect Citizens’ Rights

The Nigeria Police Force has introduced a series of reforms to reposition the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) and restore public trust. The new rules of engagement aim to prevent misconduct and protect citizens’ rights.

Key Reforms:

• No Involvement in Civil Matters: SARS is prohibited from handling civil disputes.
• No Interference in Cyber Crime Cases: SARS personnel cannot arrest individuals over alleged internet fraud (Yahoo Yahoo).
• Restricted Stop and Search: They can only conduct stop-and-search operations in response to distress calls.
• No Commercial Disputes: They are not allowed to intervene in debt recovery, landlord-tenant issues, or similar cases.
• No Social/Relationship Cases: SARS cannot interfere in marital or personal relationship matters.
• Focus on Armed Robbery & Kidnapping: Their role is strictly limited to tackling armed robbery and kidnapping cases.

How to Identify Fake Policemen:

✅ Number Tag: A genuine police number tag has six digits. Anything less is fake.
✅ Female Officers Only: Only female officers have numbers starting with “0.” Any male officer with “0” is fake.
✅ Name Tag: A real police officer’s name tag is woven into the uniform, not removable.
✅ SPY Police: Their number must be three or four digits with “SPY” boldly inscribed on the shoulder.
