Peter Obi Criticizes the Detention of Dele Farotimi

Former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has strongly criticized the arrest of human rights lawyer and activist Dele Farotimi by the Nigeria Police over defamation allegations.
Describing the arrest as an abuse of police powers and a threat to democratic principles, Obi stated that it represents an attempt to intimidate dissenting voices and stifle free expression in Nigeria.
In a statement on Tuesday, Obi emphasized that the police should protect citizens’ rights, not suppress them.
He argued that defamation is a civil matter to be addressed in court, not through intimidation or misuse of law enforcement. Calling for Farotimi’s immediate and unconditional release, Obi urged the police to uphold the Nigerian Constitution and prioritize their duty to the people rather than serving the interests of those in power.
