Adams Oshiomhole: Some Soldiers During the Biafran War Believed Gowon Was Suited to Be a Catholic Priest
At an event attended by former Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon, former Governor Adams Oshiomhole commended Gowon for his leadership during the Biafran War. Oshiomhole shared a story about how a former military officer described Gowon’s approach to the war, highlighting his emphasis on treating the conflict as a family matter. According to Oshiomhole, Gowon consistently urged his officers to minimize bloodshed and focus on maintaining the unity of Nigeria.
During live coverage by Symfoni TV, Oshiomhole recounted how this officer, who later became president, told him that many military personnel believed Gowon’s compassion for human life was so strong that he seemed more suited to being a Catholic priest than a military leader. This officer explained that Gowon’s deep concern for preserving life stood out, even during the country’s most challenging times.
Oshiomhole quoted the officer as saying that whenever they prepared for military offensives, Gowon would remind them that the war was a family affair, urging them to avoid unnecessary bloodshed. He stressed that the main objective was to keep Nigeria united.
Oshiomhole added that some soldiers remarked that Gowon’s gentle and humane nature made him more fit for a religious role than a military one, as he was deeply averse to any loss of life.
In Oshiomhole’s own words, he expressed admiration for Gowon’s legacy, stating, “Sir, you have done so much to keep Nigeria united.” He underscored how Gowon’s compassionate leadership during the war played a key role in preserving the nation’s unity during one of its most difficult periods.
