“Lukaku: ‘They viewed me as the next Drogba in England, but I’m not.'”
Romelu Lukaku has spoken out about the frequent comparisons he’s faced throughout his career, especially during his time in English football. Often seen as the successor to Chelsea icon Didier Drogba due to his size and playing style, Lukaku believes these comparisons miss the mark.
“In England, they wanted to categorize me. When they see someone with my physique, they think: a new Drogba,” Lukaku said in a recent interview with Friends of Sports, released on YouTube on Wednesday. The Belgian striker, who has played for top Premier League clubs like Chelsea, Manchester United, and Everton, acknowledged that while his physical presence is a key part of his game, his approach to play differs significantly from Drogba’s.
“I’m not like that. Didier was adept at playing with his back to goal; he could control the ball no matter where it came from. That’s not my game,” he clarified.Lukaku further highlighted the challenges he faced due to the persistent comparisons with Drogba, whose unique skills and style set a standard that many expected him to follow.
