Alonso led his team to their 33rd game without a defeat, a feat that has never been achieved by any team in the Bundesliga. They achieved this feat in their 2-1 victory over Mainz 05 on Friday, February 23, 2024.

Granit Xhaka put the Black-and-Reds in front early on with his first goal for the club, but the Mainz 05 responded almost immediately by getting the equaliser. However, Robert Andrich scored what proved to be the winning goal in the 68th minute of the game.

Bayer Leverkusen extended their lead at the top of the league table to 11 points ahead of their close rivals, Bayern Munich. They face FC Köln next on Sunday, March 3, 2024.
