Signing Mason Mount Could Be a Risky Move for Manchester United

Manchester united are making a significant effort to secure the services of Mason Mount from Chelsea as it was reported. However, it may be more prudent for the club to allocate their funds to other areas of their team rather than focusing solely on one player.

Following successful loan stints at Vitesse and Derby County, Mount found his breakthrough at Stamford Bridge in 2019-20 under Frank Lampard, rapidly becoming a crucial player.

Chelsea benefitted from Mount’s adaptability to seamlessly switch between traditional midfield roles or play out wide in a front three. He also provided cover in the holding midfield position.

The England international picked up back-to-back Player of the Season awards at Chelsea in 2020-21 and 2021-22 while also playing a key role in their Champions League triumph. Furthermore, he garnered high praise from both Lampard and his successor, Tuchel.

But that sparkle disappeared last season. Tuchel was relieved of his duties following a poor start and Chelsea struggled under his successor Graham Potter before Lampard was brought back as an interim manager. Mount could only contribute three goals and two assists to Chelsea’s cause as they finished 12th in the Premier League.

Despite being one of the poorest performers in a team filled with overrated players, the 24-year-old is oddly the transfer target for Manchester United. The Premier League giants made an initial offer of £40 million ($50m) for Mason Mount, a bid that Chelsea turned down.

Undoubtedly Manchester United will return with an improved offer for the player. However, the acquisition of Mount may not generate the level of excitement and confidence required to mount a potential title challenge in the 2023-2024 season.
