Manchester City Make Shock Move For Barcelona’s Dani Olmo

Manchester City have reportedly entered the race to sign Barcelona attacking midfielder Dani Olmo in what’s being described as a surprise summer pursuit, according to Relevo.

The 27-year-old Spaniard, who returned to Barcelona just last summer after playing a key role in Spain’s Euro 2024 success, has had anything but a smooth homecoming. What was meant to be a fairytale return quickly turned into a challenging season marked by injury troubles, registration delays, and legal complications.

Barcelona initially faced problems registering Olmo due to their ongoing financial difficulties, sparking a drawn-out conflict that involved Spain’s National Sports Council. Though Olmo was eventually cleared to play, LaLiga continues to question the legitimacy of his registration, casting a shadow over his future at the club.

Despite the off-field issues and fitness concerns, Olmo has impressed when available. He’s managed to deliver 11 goals and six assists across 36 matches in all competitions this season, underlining his importance to the squad.

Now, Relevo’s trusted journalist Matteo Moretto reports that Manchester City are “closely monitoring Olmo’s situation.” Pep Guardiola is said to be a “huge admirer” of the player and sees him as a potential long-term replacement for Kevin De Bruyne, whose future at City remains uncertain due to his age and recurring injury problems.

City had previously targeted Bayer Leverkusen sensation Florian Wirtz, but with the German seemingly headed for Bayern Munich, attention has shifted to Olmo. His creativity, football IQ, and international pedigree make him an appealing option for Guardiola and sporting director Hugo Viana.

While Barcelona are reluctant to lose Olmo just a year after bringing him back, their financial situation might force them to reconsider if Manchester City come forward with a significant bid. For now, Olmo is not actively looking to leave and remains committed to Barcelona after making a determined effort to return.

Still, the growing interest from the Premier League champions could shift the narrative—especially if Barcelona’s administrative and financial problems continue. With City’s financial muscle and Guardiola’s admiration for the player, this potential transfer saga could accelerate quickly in the weeks ahead.
