Man Utd Given Clear Path to Sign Argentine Wonderkid as Real Madrid Exit Race
Manchester United’s hopes of signing highly-rated River Plate teenager Franco Mastantuono have received a major boost, as Real Madrid—once seen as the frontrunner—has reportedly dropped out of the race.
As reported by FootballTransfers, the Spanish giants were put off by Mastantuono’s €45 million release clause and are said to have been frustrated with how his representatives handled negotiations. This has effectively opened the door for United, who are now seen as the leading contender to land the 17-year-old talent.
With Madrid no longer in pursuit, United are reportedly ready to meet the €45 million clause in full to secure Mastantuono’s signature. Though other European clubs such as PSG, AC Milan, and Inter Milan are still showing interest, United appear to be in pole position.
Mastantuono, dubbed by some as a “new Messi” due to his playing style and rapid development, has captured global attention, especially after scoring a spectacular long-range free-kick in a heated clash against Boca Juniors. He’s already tallied four goals in 13 appearances this season for River Plate, solidifying his status as one of South America’s brightest prospects.
Despite the growing interest, River Plate are determined to keep the youngster until at least the end of the year. Club general secretary Stefano Di Carlo made their position clear, stating, “Mastantuono is staying at River Plate for the entire year, that’s a given.”
Any potential move to Old Trafford would have to wait, as Mastantuono turns 18 in August and cannot complete an international transfer until then. Nonetheless, Manchester United is reportedly moving swiftly to lock in the deal ahead of time.
Interestingly, Mastantuono had previously rebuffed an approach from Real Madrid to commit to a new contract with River Plate. Although Madrid revisited their interest last summer, their latest withdrawal now paves a clearer path for Manchester United to bring the Argentine starlet to the Premier League.
