Former Ajax Player Quincy Promes Sentenced to 6 Years in Prison for Drug Smuggling
Former Ajax and Sevilla forward Quincy Promes Receives 6-Year Prison Sentence for Cocaine Smuggling
Today, on Wednesday, February 14, 2024, a Dutch court handed down a verdict in the case involving Quincy Promes, convicting him in absentia for his connection to a drug smuggling operation. The Amsterdam District Court sentenced the 32-year-old footballer, who is currently playing for Spartak Moscow, to six years in prison.
The court found Promes guilty of participating in the import and export of substantial quantities of cocaine in 2020. Despite being summoned for trial in the Dutch capital, Promes, formerly associated with Ajax and Sevilla, resides in Moscow and did not appear for the proceedings.
Despite Promes’s denial of the allegations, his lawyers informed the judges of his stance during the trial. Prosecutors had requested a nine-year sentence for his involvement in smuggling approximately 1,360kg of cocaine through the port of Antwerp in Belgium to the Netherlands, in two separate shipments. The court, citing evidence from phone taps, concluded that Promes had direct involvement in the transportation of the drugs, concealed within shipments of salt originating from Brazil, as well as their subsequent distribution from the port.
In its written verdict, the court expressed strong disapproval of Promes’s actions, particularly noting his status as a highly paid footballer with a significant following on social media. The court remarked, “This makes it even more objectionable that the suspect tries to increase his wealth (and possibly also prestige in certain circles) through involvement in large international drug transports.”
Promes’s legal team informed the Dutch newspaper AD that he intends to appeal the sentence, as he vehemently denies all charges related to the importation, exportation, transportation, and possession of the drugs.
