Wike Orders Destruction Of Motorcycles In Abuja, Says &Quot; We Are Just Following The Law

In a bold move that has stirred public debate across Abuja, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister, Nyesom Wike, has directed the mass seizure and destruction of commercial motorcycles operating in prohibited zones. This aggressive enforcement is part of a broader campaign to reinforce existing traffic and security laws in the city.

Thousands of motorcycles, commonly known as okadas, were recently impounded and crushed in an operation that has left many riders stunned. Speaking during a press briefing with Voice TV Nigeria, a representative of the FCT Minister explained that the government is merely carrying out an already established law. “We are simply executing what the law mandates,” the official stated while overseeing the destruction of the bikes.

He clarified that the regulation being enforced was not a new initiative but one passed during the tenure of the previous FCT Minister. According to the law, motorcycles are banned from operating in certain areas of Abuja, and violators risk having their bikes permanently confiscated and destroyed.

The FCT administration insists the crackdown is crucial for improving traffic flow and ensuring public safety, particularly in high-security zones. Authorities believe that restricting okada operations in these areas supports better city planning and reduces criminal activity.

Public opinion on the matter remains divided. While some residents support the government’s firm stance as a step toward restoring order, others view the method as harsh and lacking empathy. Critics argue that more humane alternatives—such as creating designated routes or offering alternatives to displaced riders—could have been considered.
