Shehu Sani Responds After APP Secures Victory in 22 of 23 Local Government Areas in Rivers State Election
Senator Shehu Sani, a well-known member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and political commentator, has shared his views on the outcome of the recent Rivers State Local Government elections. In the elections, the Action People’s Party (APP) achieved a sweeping victory, winning 22 out of 23 Local Government Areas.CONTINUE
Sani used a vivid metaphor to compare the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to the State Independent Electoral Commissions (SIECOMs).
He compared INEC to a leopard that “eats some and leaves some for others,” suggesting that INEC allows for some level of fairness and competition in national elections. In contrast, he likened SIECOMs to hyenas that “eat everything, including the bones,” implying that local electoral bodies often favor the ruling party, leaving little to no space for opposition parties to compete fairly in local elections.
The APP’s overwhelming victory, securing 22 chairmanship positions while the AA managed to win only one, has sparked concerns about the fairness of the election and possible disputes over the process.Sani’s remarks bring attention to the broader issues within Nigeria’s electoral system, particularly at the state and local levels, where bias and manipulation are more prevalent. In a recent post on X, Sani’s analogy has fueled discussions about the credibility of the Rivers State LG election results, and whether SIECOMs can conduct elections fairly. His comments emphasize the need for electoral reforms and greater transparency, as these local elections serve as a reminder of the challenges ahead for Nigeria’s democratic system.
Sani’s statement is a call to action for electoral bodies to focus on fairness, transparency, and accountability to ensure a more robust democratic process in which all parties have a fair chance to compete and the true will of the people is reflected.
