The former governor of Anambra State was one of the leading contenders for president on Saturday, February 25, 2023, and the campaign spokesman thought that because of “the quantity of endorsements that” he received, he was the one to beat.
When asked what would happen if Obi lost the election, Tanko responded that if the process was free, fair, and credible, his candidate would concede.
But, he asserts that if there is any suspicion of fraud, the party will exhaust all legal options to contest the election results.
To quote Tanko: “Since we are Democrats, we are not terrified. A true democrat only demonstrates his character when he is aware that he was defeated in a fair and open election.
He qualifies as a democrat due to that. Yet he has the right to question the procedure if there was manipulation and he was denied victory. If we are defeated in a legitimate election, we will still act democratically. The requirement is that the procedure be impartial, trustworthy, and free.”
