Peter Obi Affirms 2027 Presidential Bid, Advocates Youth Engagement and Political Renewal

Peter Obi, the 2023 Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate, has reaffirmed his commitment to contest in the 2027 general election under the same political platform. In a video message shared with LP supporters via WhatsApp, Obi addressed a group of young Nigerians, expressing both his continued dedication to the party and his vision for a more robust democratic process.
In the conversation, reported by Vanguard, Obi tackled questions about internal rifts within the Labour Party and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), alleging that the ruling government is actively fueling these disputes to weaken the opposition. He referenced past events during President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua’s tenure, noting that unlike the current administration, Yar’Adua moved quickly to resolve political conflicts. Obi suggested that today’s leaders deliberately exploit party divisions to retain power and stifle alternative voices.
Reiterating the importance of a healthy opposition in any democracy, Obi said, “A functioning democracy requires healthy, stable parties to provide genuine choices for the electorate.” He called on Nigerians—especially the youth—to take greater responsibility in safeguarding democracy, starting with protecting their votes. While party agents play a role during elections, Obi emphasized that citizens must be vigilant and proactive in holding the process accountable.
Encouraging young people not to give up, he acknowledged that meaningful change is often met with resistance, particularly from entrenched interests benefiting from the current system. “Efforts to bring about meaningful change will always face resistance,” he said, urging resilience and continued civic involvement.
In a reflective moment, Obi discussed the need for generational change in leadership. He revealed he would be 65 years old by the 2027 election and shared, “I have a personal desire not to be running for office in my 70s.” This sentiment underscores his belief in youth inclusion and the importance of making space for a new generation of political leaders.
