Mixed Reactions Follow Governor Fubara’s May Day Statement Amid Rivers Political Crisis
Suspended Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara has stirred public attention with his May Day address to workers, where he voiced optimism that “the forces of justice, peace, and progress will prevail in the end.”
In his message, Fubara praised the determination and endurance of Rivers State workers despite the state’s ongoing political turmoil. He referred to them as “the backbone of the state’s development and beacon of hope for a better future,” recognizing their crucial role in driving progress during uncertain times.
His remarks have sparked a wide range of reactions from across the state. Supporters have lauded the message as a show of strength and a call to remain hopeful. “His unwavering stance gives us hope that democracy will be restored,” said one Port Harcourt resident.
However, critics were less impressed, questioning the practicality of his words. “Words are not enough; we need actionable solutions to the crisis,” a political analyst commented, emphasizing the need for a clear roadmap out of the political deadlock.
The political standoff in Rivers State deepened in March when President Bola Ahmed Tinubu declared a state of emergency, suspending Fubara and his deputy, and appointing Ibok-Ete Ekwe Ibas as a sole administrator in their place.
In response, the Nigeria Civil Service Union instructed state workers to boycott the traditional May Day events. Instead, they held protests to express dissatisfaction with the federal intervention and to show support for the suspended governor.
As tensions continue, many Nigerians remain divided—some backing Fubara’s resistance and others calling for decisive leadership to end the stalemate and restore democratic order in Rivers State.
