Lagos Speaker Meranda Resigns Amid Assembly Crisis
Mojisola Meranda has resigned as Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, according to former Speaker Mudashiru Obasa. Obasa, in an interview on Channels TV’s Politics Today, stated that Meranda announced her resignation during a meeting with Lagos APC leaders in Marina.
However, conflicting accounts have surfaced. An aide to Meranda dismissed the resignation claims as “fake news,” insisting that she remains the substantive Speaker and is fully in charge. The aide attributed the rumors to “mischief makers” allegedly loyal to Obasa, who was impeached by 36 out of 40 lawmakers on January 13, 2025.
Obasa, however, rejected his removal, declaring, “I have never been removed. I am not against removal, but it must follow the rules of the House and the Constitution.” On Thursday, he arrived at the Assembly under heavy security and presided over a plenary session with only four members reportedly present.
The leadership crisis continues, with both Obasa and Meranda asserting claims to the Speakership. As various stakeholders step in, further developments are expected in the unfolding power struggle.
