Kwara Govt Denies Awarding $800m Contract to Governor’s Brother as PDP Demands Probe

The Kwara State Government has denied claims that Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq secretly awarded an $800 million contract to his elder brother, Dr. Alimi AbdulRazaq. The allegation was made by Hon. Ilyasu Ibrahim, a member of the All Progressives Congress and an Ò Tọ̀ Gẹ́ movement ally, during a radio programme aired on Wednesday.
According to PUNCH (December 5, 2025), Commissioner for Communications Bolanle Olukoju dismissed the claim on Thursday, describing it as “false, malicious, reckless and intended to cause mischief.” She stated that the state had not awarded any contract of such value and that Dr. Alimi, whom she described as a respected lawyer and Bencher, “is not a contractor.”
Olukoju criticised the radio station for airing the allegation, saying platforms that promote misinformation “pose a risk to public peace.” She added that the government has asked the National Broadcasting Commission to investigate the broadcast and encouraged anyone who feels defamed to seek legal redress.
However, the Peoples Democratic Party accused the state government of evading the central issue. In a statement by its Publicity Secretary, Olusegun Olusola Adewara, the PDP questioned whether the governor had indeed awarded any contract—secretly or otherwise—to his brother.
The party demanded a written response from the governor, a public declaration from Dr. Alimi AbdulRazaq, and a full breakdown of all contracts awarded since 2019. It also called for a forensic review of a previous transformer contract allegedly linked to another individual bearing the AbdulRazaq name, who reportedly received 85 percent payment without completing the project.
The PDP further urged authorities to ensure that SBS FM, the station that aired the allegation, is not harassed, warning that “the repeated appearance of the name ‘AbdulRazaq’ in controversial contract reports is a disturbing pattern.”
