“I Won’t Step Down Over False Allegations” – Akpabio Declares
Senate President and former Akwa Ibom State Governor, Godswill Akpabio, has made a firm declaration that he will not resign or step aside from his role over unverified allegations.
Speaking during a recent public address, Akpabio responded to growing suggestions that he should temporarily relinquish his position pending investigations. He pushed back strongly, stressing that he refuses to yield to pressure when the claims against him have not been substantiated.
Citing historical injustices, Akpabio referenced cases from the United States where Black individuals were wrongfully imprisoned for decades based on false accusations. “If you watch what the current revelations in America, you realize that there are some black people because of their skins who went to prison sometime 37 years, sometimes 27 years, some 25 years for false allegations,” he said.
He emphasized that stepping down under such circumstances would be premature and unfair. “I’m not one of those people who would, as you say, step down for false allegation. Then when eventually it is proven that the allegations were false, they will say, ‘Oh we were unfair to Akpabio.’ No, I’m not that man,” he stated.
Akpabio’s remarks reflect his resolve to fight back against what he sees as an unjust culture of public condemnation without due process. He made it clear that unless concrete evidence emerges, he has no intention of vacating his seat or yielding to public pressure.
