Goodluck Jonathan Poised for 2027 Presidential Run Under PDP
Former President Goodluck Jonathan is reportedly preparing to contest the 2027 presidential election under the banner of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), according to a party insider who spoke with Vanguard. The move is said to be supported by senior political figures aiming to restore what they describe as national stability and economic progress experienced during Jonathan’s previous administration.
The plan, reportedly backed by several serving PDP governors, envisions Jonathan as a transitional leader to serve a single four-year term, after which power would shift to the North in 2031. As part of his consultations, Jonathan has met with former military president General Ibrahim Babangida in Minna and is engaging stakeholders in the South-South to consolidate grassroots support.
Within the PDP, momentum appears to be building for Jonathan’s candidacy. Daniel Woyengikuro, the party’s National Financial Secretary, referred to Jonathan as the PDP’s national leader and a capable candidate to address Nigeria’s current challenges. He also acknowledged Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde as a strong alternative but emphasized Jonathan’s experience and unifying presence.
Legal debates persist over Jonathan’s eligibility due to a 2018 constitutional amendment that bars anyone who has been sworn in twice as president or governor from seeking office again. Jonathan completed the late President Umaru Yar’Adua’s term in 2010 before winning a full term in 2011. However, a 2022 Federal High Court ruling in Yenagoa held that the amendment does not apply retroactively, affirming his eligibility.
Human rights lawyer Johnmary Jideobi has expressed concerns, citing a 2012 Supreme Court decision that reinforces the constitutional eight-year limit. He warns that Jonathan’s candidacy may face legal challenges as the election nears.
Meanwhile, veteran PDP leader Chief Olabode George has declared his support, arguing that Jonathan’s initial term, which began under the Doctrine of Necessity, should not count against him under the constitution. George added that Jonathan’s past achievements are now being recognized more broadly by the Nigerian public.
