Former Anambra Commissioner Maja Umeh Passes Away at 64

Anambra State is mourning the loss of one of its prominent public figures, Chief Maja Umeh, who died on Wednesday at the age of 64. Umeh, a former Commissioner for Information, Culture, and Tourism, was known for his dedication to public service and his passion for promoting Anambra’s cultural identity.
As reported by Punch, Umeh hailed from Amichi in the Nnewi South Local Government Area. His death comes just months before what would have been his 65th birthday.
The current Commissioner for Information, Dr. Law Mefor, expressed heartfelt condolences in an official statement, acknowledging Umeh’s significant impact during his tenure. “Chief Umeh played a significant role in the growth and development of Anambra State during his time in office,” Mefor noted.
The late Umeh was praised for his efforts in enhancing the state’s image through improved public communication and for showcasing Anambra’s rich cultural and tourism potential. His contributions to community development were also highlighted as part of his enduring legacy.
The state government extended sympathies to his family, friends, and political allies, describing his passing as a great loss not only to Anambra but to Nigeria at large. “His contributions were a testament to the importance of committed public service,” the statement added.
A lifelong member of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), Umeh held several key roles within the party. He was a member of its Board of Trustees and, in October 2023, was honored as a Life Patron for his unwavering dedication and service.
Up until his death, Maja Umeh remained actively involved in political and cultural circles and maintained strong relationships with notable leaders, including former Governor Peter Obi and current Governor Professor Chukwuma Soludo.
