Akpabio Urges Senators To Deliver Results, Says ‘We Are Under Watch’

As the Senate reconvened after its Easter and Eid-el-Fitr break, Senate President Godswill Akpabio delivered a strong message to his colleagues, emphasizing the urgent need to meet the expectations of Nigerians with concrete legislative action. Speaking from the newly automated Red Chamber in Abuja, Akpabio’s address underscored both the challenges facing the nation and the critical role of the Senate in addressing them.

According to The Sun Newspaper on May 6, 2025, Akpabio began by drawing inspiration from the just-concluded religious observances, describing Easter and Ramadan as symbols of sacrifice, unity, and endurance—qualities he believes should define the Senate’s approach going forward. He urged senators to embody these values in their deliberations and decisions.

Acknowledging the country’s pressing issues—including inflation, power instability, and insecurity—Akpabio stressed that Nigerians are not looking for grand speeches but tangible solutions. “Our people look to us, not for rhetoric, but for rescue,” he said, calling for legislative backing of President Bola Tinubu’s administration in tackling national problems.

He also highlighted the growing demand for reforms, particularly in the electoral and judicial sectors. Pointing to heightened scrutiny both locally and globally, Akpabio warned: “We are under watch. No test must find us wanting.” He reminded lawmakers that their decisions have far-reaching consequences beyond the Senate walls.

Outlining a renewed legislative agenda, Akpabio emphasized key areas such as national security, economic recovery, educational development, youth empowerment, and digital innovation. He called on his colleagues to put national interest above party loyalty. “Let us elevate debate over division. Let us govern with grace, not grudge,” he urged.

Reaffirming the Senate’s dedication to public service, Akpabio reassured Nigerians that the lawmakers are returning with a clear sense of duty. “We are here refreshed in spirit, renewed in resolve, to build a nation where peace is not an illusion, and progress is not a promise, but a pattern,” he concluded.
