Akpabio to Tinubu: Don’t Let Me Promise What I Can’t Deliver—2027 Will Demand Results, Not Rhetoric
Senate President Godswill Akpabio has issued a blunt reality check to President Bola Tinubu, warning that without substantial achievements, campaign promises alone won’t guarantee victory in 2027. Speaking during a televised appearance on Arise TV on May 23, 2025, Akpabio reflected on the shortcomings of the 2023 elections and urged the administration to focus on tangible results.
He noted that despite the massive crowds at APC rallies in 2023, the party failed to secure 25% of votes in several states that had appeared to be supportive. This, he argued, is a clear sign that enthusiasm must be matched with real progress on the ground. “Don’t allow me to come and stand in front of this August Assembly and promise you that I’ll deliver South Nigeria,” Akpabio cautioned. “Go and sleep. Please don’t sleep. Otherwise, I’ll be telling you lies. We still have a lot of work to do.”
While acknowledging key accomplishments—including visible transformations in Lagos, the FCT, and improvements in several sectors—Akpabio emphasized that more must be done to meet public expectations. He referenced positive assessments from foreign diplomats but added that Nigeria’s journey is far from over.
Using a striking metaphor, Akpabio described the political landscape as a tree that bears fruit: “When a tree bears fruit, it attracts stones.” The message was clear—progress brings both praise and criticism, and leaders must be ready for both.
He also spoke about the murky nature of Nigerian politics, warning of behind-the-scenes maneuvering by rivals: “You know, politics is a game of witchcraft. They meet in the night, and things change in the daytime,” he said, alluding to secret alliances and political plots aimed at destabilizing the government.
Akpabio’s remarks come as opposition figures like Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi explore potential coalitions, heightening the stakes ahead of 2027. His message to the APC: deliver measurable, visible outcomes—because the next election will not be won by words alone.
