Wole Soyinka Blasts Nbc Over Ban On Eedris Abdulkareem’s Song

Nobel Laureate and acclaimed playwright, Professor Wole Soyinka, has strongly criticized the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) for banning the song “Tell Your Papa” by veteran musician Eedris Abdulkareem.

As reported by PUNCH on its official X (formerly Twitter) account, Soyinka denounced the move as an attack on democratic values and an abuse of regulatory authority.

The NBC ordered media houses nationwide to stop airing the track, claiming it contained offensive material. But Soyinka, a staunch defender of civil liberties and freedom of speech, condemned the decision, calling it an excessive use of power.

In his trademark sarcastic tone, Soyinka said, “Not only should the record that is being accused of being offensive be excluded from circulation, but the musician should also be prohibited from performing. According to the next step, the PMAN, or any other musical association that Abdulkareem is a member of, ought to also be put under the microscope.”

He argued that moves like this undermine democracy by stifling critical voices and limiting freedom of expression.

The ban has ignited widespread conversation online, with many Nigerians accusing the NBC of censoring dissent and attacking creative freedom. “Tell Your Papa”—widely seen as a bold critique of governance and societal challenges in Nigeria—has continued to gain popularity on digital platforms, despite being taken off airwaves.

While Abdulkareem is yet to officially comment, he’s known for using his music as a tool for activism and social commentary. Critics are now calling on the NBC to reverse the ban, warning that continued suppression of artistic voices could damage Nigeria’s cultural and political dialogue.
