Wike Says Former Governors Still Have Roles to Play in Nigeria
Nyesom Wike, the former governor of Rivers State, has disclosed what he will ask the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) if he is questioned about his support for Godswill Akpabio, the Senate President.
Recall that Wike supported Akpabio and was instrumental in securing the G5’s unanimous backing for his election as Senate President.
When discussing this at a press conference, Wike said that he backed Akpabio because he cares about maintaining the country’s unity and that his party cannot confront him about his views.
He continued by asserting that the PDP had not informed him of its selected candidates for the 10th National Assembly’s leadership roles.
He asserted that the party leadership opted to endorse Akpabio for the sake of national unity and would not be intimidated by those who think Bola Tinubu shouldn’t be president since they felt the G5 had no bearing on the situation.
“We pledged to Mr. President, and it turned out just as we anticipated it would in the general elections of 2023. You can call me a PDP supporter, but I’m talking about Nigeria, not the party.
I never had a call from the party telling me that we shouldn’t support this or that, and I dare any of them to claim that they convened a meeting.
They mistakenly think that since we are no longer governors, we have no role to play. We backed Akpabio because we want this nation to be united, and we won’t be bullied or tele-guided by those who have bad intentions for the nation.
Nobody is more PDP than me, so if PDP calls and wants to know why I backed him, I’ll question what authority they have to do so.
