President Bola Tinubu has expressed profound sorrow over the death of former President Muhammadu Buhari, describing him as a patriot, statesman, and soldier who helped shape the foundation of modern Nigeria.

Buhari died on Sunday, July 13, 2025, at a hospital in the United Kingdom. He was 82.

In an official statement issued shortly after the news broke, President Tinubu praised Buhari’s life of “duty, honour, and an unwavering belief in Nigeria’s unity and progress.”

“President Buhari was, to the very core, a patriot. He stood firm through turbulent times, led with quiet strength and integrity, and placed Nigeria above personal interest at every turn,” Tinubu said.

The President acknowledged Buhari’s unique role in Nigeria’s history, having served as both a military ruler from 1984 to 1985 and a democratically elected president from 2015 to 2023. He commended Buhari’s anti-corruption drive and his emphasis on discipline and accountability in public service.

To honour the late leader, President Tinubu ordered all national flags to be flown at half-mast for seven days beginning Sunday. He also convened an emergency session of the Federal Executive Council (FEC), scheduled for Tuesday, July 15, dedicated to Buhari’s memory.

Tinubu announced that Buhari would be accorded full state honours, recognizing his significant contributions to the nation.

He extended condolences to the Buhari family, including former First Lady Aisha Buhari, and to the people of Katsina State and the Daura Emirate, Buhari’s hometown.

“As the nation mourns, may we reflect on the legacy of a leader who inspired generations to serve with courage, conviction, and selflessness,” Tinubu said, concluding with a prayer: “May Allah forgive his shortcomings and grant him Al-Jannah Firdaus.”
