Rivers State Governor Fubara Declares 2days Lockdown (DETAILS)
Rivers State Governor, Sir Siminalayi Fubara, has announced public holidays on Thursday, October 3, and Friday, October 4, 2024, in preparation for the local government elections set for October 5.
In a statewide address, he declared a complete ban on all vehicular and human movement in and out of the state from midnight on October 4 until 5:00 PM on October 5, emphasizing the need for registered voters to return to their communities to participate in the elections. The Governor urged law enforcement to take strict action against anyone who violates this movement restriction.
Fubara’s address highlighted the legal necessity for these elections, referencing a Supreme Court ruling that prohibited local government councils from being managed by unelected officials. He reaffirmed his commitment to conducting the elections in compliance with the law, stressing that all necessary arrangements have been made by the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC).
He expressed gratitude to the state’s security agencies for their support in ensuring a peaceful election process and urged all residents to actively engage in the voting process on election day.
