Reactions Emerge After Abike Dabiri Shares Photo of Super Eagles Players Departing Libya Airport for Nigeria.
On Monday, social media was filled with reactions after Abike Dabiri-Erewa, Chairperson of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NIDCOM), posted a photo of the Super Eagles players preparing to leave a Libyan airport for Nigeria.
This came after a tense situation involving the team. The crisis began when the Super Eagles’ captain, William Troost-Ekong, announced that the team had decided not to participate in their scheduled match against Libya. The players had endured significant delays and challenging conditions at the airport.
Troost-Ekong appealed for urgent intervention from the Nigerian government, stating, “We have called on the Nigerian government to intervene and rescue us. Together, we have decided that we will not play this game.”
He further urged the Confederation of African Football (CAF) to investigate the treatment they had experienced. Troost-Ekong added, “If CAF allows this kind of behavior, they can have the points. We will not risk traveling anywhere by road here; it’s unsafe even with security.”In her post, Dabiri-Erewa wished the team a safe return, writing, “The Super Eagles team is now boarding. Wishing them journey mercies.”
However, her message sparked a flood of reactions on X (formerly Twitter), with many users expressing both support for the team and frustration over the circumstances they had faced.Social media users conveyed a mixture of solidarity with the Super Eagles and criticism of the poor treatment that Nigerian teams often encounter during international travels.
Concerns about the players’ safety and welfare were raised, and many called for greater accountability from relevant authorities. As discussions unfolded, many echoed the need for the Nigerian government to take more decisive action to protect its athletes abroad.
The Super Eagles’ ordeal in Libya has sparked a wider conversation about the difficulties Nigerian sports teams face internationally. This incident has highlighted the urgent need for reforms to ensure that athletes can represent Nigeria without facing unnecessary risks or hardship.
