President-elect Donald Trump promises to deport all illegal immigrants and abolish birthright citizenship on his first day in office (video).
US President-elect Donald Trump has pledged to deport all undocumented immigrants in the United States over the course of his four-year term.
In an interview aired Sunday on NBC’s Meet the Press, Trump outlined his plan for a major crackdown on illegal immigration and stated that he intends to end birthright citizenship on his first day in office.
When asked about deporting all undocumented immigrants, Trump responded, “You have to do it,” and later emphasized, “We’re starting with the criminals, and we’ve got to do it,” acknowledging the logistical challenges of the operation.
Trump also announced his plan to eliminate birthright citizenship, calling the policy “ridiculous.” He mentioned the possibility of using executive action to accomplish this on his first day, but also suggested the option of a constitutional amendment. “We have to end it,” he declared.
Additionally, Trump expressed openness to negotiating with Democrats on a legislative solution for “Dreamers” — immigrants brought to the US illegally as children.
