Poultry Farmers Warn Egg Prices Could Reach N10,000.
Poultry farmers in Nigeria are sounding the alarm over a potential rise in egg prices, forecasting an increase from the current rate of N5,500 to as high as N10,000 per crate. The Poultry Association of Nigeria (PAN) links this anticipated surge to the rising costs of transportation following the removal of fuel subsidies, as well as a significant increase in feed prices driven by millers.
At a press conference in Abuja to commemorate World Egg Day, Musa Hakeem, Secretary of PAN’s Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Chapter, urged the government to declare a state of emergency in the egg production industry.
He warned that without immediate government intervention, the price increase would be inevitable, further worsening the decline in protein consumption among Nigerians.
“The proportional increase in production costs indicates that prices could reach N10,000 per crate, but we have kept them at N5,500 out of consideration for consumers,” Hakeem explained.
He also expressed concern over the lack of meaningful government support, noting that the last grain assistance provided to poultry farmers was three years ago. He called for better collaboration between the government and PAN, emphasizing that the association has valuable data on poultry farmers that could be used for more targeted support.
Moreover, agro dealer Jude Arikogu pointed out problems related to the quality and quantity of poultry feed, mentioning that some 25kg bags often do not meet the required weight, adding to the financial strain on farmers already facing increased operational costs.
The poultry industry’s warnings highlight the urgent need for action to stabilize the sector, ensuring that essential protein sources remain affordable for Nigerians while also supporting local poultry production.
