Peter Obi Demands Justice For 15-Year-Old Supporter Detained Without Trial

Labour Party’s former presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has raised his voice in support of 15-year-old Yusuf Alabi, who has been detained at the Kirikiri Correctional Centre for more than three months without trial.

Alabi became a symbol of youthful courage in 2023 after a photo of him standing confidently in front of Obi’s campaign convoy in Lagos went viral, capturing national attention and admiration.

In a heartfelt message posted to his official X (formerly Twitter) account, Obi expressed dismay over the young boy’s prolonged detention and called on law enforcement agencies to act within the bounds of the law.

“I was made aware of the predicament of a young boy named Quadri Yusuf Alabi, who has been detained for over three months without trial, appeared in court for the first time in March, and still remains in custody,” Obi wrote. He further added, “I have contacted Barrister Inibehe Effiong, a lawyer who has been actively working to secure his release. I sincerely appeal to the police and other government agents to always operate within the law and refrain from weaponizing citizens, especially our youths, who need our care and love to help build a new Nigeria.”

Alabi was reportedly captured by local youths and handed over to authorities, who accused him of being a well-known street fighter and thief. Alabi, however, denies the allegations, claiming that the accusations are fueled by a personal grudge. Reports suggest the conflict arose after his family declined to offer a “settlement” to those who had allegedly expected a share of the monetary gifts Alabi received from Obi and Cubana Chief Priest following his notable appearance at the campaign rally.

He is currently facing charges of fighting and theft. His first court appearance took place on March 27, and his next hearing is set for April 28.

Barrister Inibehe Effiong, who is leading the legal fight for Alabi’s freedom, confirmed Obi’s involvement and assured that efforts are being stepped up to secure justice. “I confirm that you contacted me earlier today about this case. I commend your interest, Sir. Efforts have been stepped up in the last 24 hours to ensure that justice is done and that Quadri Yusuf Alabi regains his freedom soon. I will provide an update within the coming hours,” Effiong posted on X.

Effiong concluded his statement with hope, saying that history will eventually vindicate those who stand on the side of justice.
