Oby Ezekwesili Slams FG Over Criminal Charges Against Suspended Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan
Renowned Nigerian activist and former minister, Oby Ezekwesili, has openly condemned the Federal Government’s decision to file criminal charges against suspended Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan. Ezekwesili described the move as a misuse of power and a direct threat to Nigeria’s democratic values.
Senator Natasha, one of just four women in the Nigerian Senate, was suspended after accusing the Senate President of sexual harassment—a claim that has sparked national attention and controversy.
Taking to X (formerly Twitter), Ezekwesili expressed her outrage, stating that the charges appear to be an effort to silence the senator rather than pursue justice. She asserted, “The government’s actions are an abuse of power and a threat to democracy,” adding that the focus seems to be on shielding influential figures instead of uncovering the truth.
In her post, Ezekwesili outlined four urgent demands to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. First, she called for disciplinary action against the Attorney General, criticizing him for ignoring pressing legal reforms that could benefit Nigeria’s political and economic systems.
Second, she demanded the immediate withdrawal of what she termed “frivolous and dangerous” charges against Senator Natasha. According to Ezekwesili, the senator is merely seeking a fair hearing on her serious allegations, and targeting her with criminal charges undermines justice and democratic accountability.
Third, she urged President Tinubu to direct the Inspector General of Police to investigate the 12 petitions Senator Natasha has filed over the past three months, which reportedly highlight threats to her life. Ezekwesili stressed that these claims must be addressed with urgency and fairness.
Finally, she insisted that Senator Natasha’s official security detail be reinstated, accusing the Senate President of removing her protection in retaliation for her allegations. This action, she said, not only endangers the senator’s safety but represents another clear abuse of power.
Ezekwesili concluded her statement with a strong message to the President: “Every choice has consequences.” She urged him to stand for justice and integrity rather than indulge in political retaliation.
