Nnamdi Kanu Offers ₦1M to Law Students to Challenge Legal Basis of His Detention
Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), has announced a ₦1 million reward for any Nigerian law student who can find a legal precedent supporting the restriction of an acquitted individual’s release through a stay of execution. This challenge was revealed by Kanu’s legal team, led by Aloy Ejimakor, during a press briefing in Abuja, as reported.
“Mazi Nnamdi Kanu pledges to give any law student in any Nigerian university the sum of one million Naira if such student finds any precedent on stay of execution in criminal proceedings where an acquitted person is by such order restrained from enjoying his freedom,” Ejimakor disclosed.
Kanu’s legal team highlighted what they described as glaring irregularities in his continued detention, labeling it a serious legal anomaly.
According to Ejimakor, the Court of Appeal had dismissed all charges against Kanu for lack of jurisdiction, yet his release was blocked by an order issued by Justice Tsamani of the Abuja Division of the Court of Appeal.
“No similar case exists in any nation’s legal history where an acquitted person is denied freedom through a stay of execution,” Ejimakor argued, calling the situation unprecedented and unjust.
“This injustice will haunt Nigeria for as long as life exists,” he added, attributing the situation to bias against Kanu as an Igbo man.
The ₦1 million pledge is seen as a bold move to spotlight the perceived legal inconsistency in Kanu’s case and question the judiciary’s role in his prolonged detention. Kanu’s offer reflects his determination to challenge a legal framework he believes has been unfairly applied to him.
