Mele Kyari at 60: A Journey of Resilience from Almajiri to NNPC Leadership
Mele Kyari, the Group Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC), marked a significant milestone on January 8, 2025, as he celebrated his 60th birthday—an occasion that also aligns with the retirement age for many leaders in public service.
In a heartfelt message shared on X, Kyari reflected on his remarkable journey from humble beginnings as an Almajiri school pupil to becoming the head of Africa’s largest energy company.
Born on January 8, 1965, Kyari’s tenure as a leader in the oil sector commenced with his appointment by former President Muhammadu Buhari in July 2019. His post not only acknowledged the blessings of his age but also expressed profound gratitude to the Nigerian government for the opportunities that have shaped his life. “Allah, by His grace, spared my life to this exceptional day,” he wrote. “I am profoundly grateful to my country for allowing me to grow from an Almajiri pupil to become the CEO of Africa’s largest energy company.”
Throughout his 32 years at NNPC, Kyari has faced numerous challenges and triumphs, attributing his success to divine grace. He also took the opportunity to apologize to those he might have inadvertently offended over the course of his career. “At this milestone, I feel the obligation to serve with even greater conviction,” he stated, emphasizing his commitment to the nation and its people.
According to Punch News, Kyari’s reflections serve as a testament to his resilience and dedication. He noted, “Reflecting backwards alone can’t account for the profoundly eventful life I spent to this date.” His journey, he explained, has been a blend of successes and setbacks, a narrative that resonates with many Nigerians who have faced adversity.
As he embarks on this new decade of life, Kyari reiterated his gratitude to his family, friends, and mentors who have been instrumental in his rise. He acknowledged the sacrifices made by his loved ones during his long years of service, pledging to continue working for the common good of the nation and its people.
The post has garnered widespread attention, with many notable figures, including current President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, offering their congratulations and celebrating Kyari’s contributions to Nigeria’s energy sector.
