Kenneth Okonkwo: APC’s Actions Could Plunge Nigeria Into Unnecessary Ethnic and Religious Rivalry
As the tussle for the offices of the Senate President and Speaker of the House of Representatives continues to intensify ahead of the upcoming 10th National Assembly, Labour Party Chieftain, and renowned lawyer, Barrister Kenneth Okonkwo took to social media to accuse the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) of attempting to set up an ethnic and religious rivalry in the country.
In a series of tweets posted on his Twitter handle on Thursday night, Okonkwo urged opposition lawmakers in the House of Reps to use their large numbers to their advantage by forming a united front against the APC.
According to him, opposition Lawmakers in the Green Chamber must not allow the ruling party to impose its preferred candidates on them because the Constitution allows every member of the House to contest leadership positions in the National Assembly.
Going further, the LP chieftain argued that elective positions in the House of Assembly must be distributed in a manner that promotes justice and fairness across the country.
He wrote; “In our Constitution, every member, irrespective of party, is entitled to run for the leadership of the National Assembly. It is obvious the APC wants to plunge Nigeria into unnecessary ethnic and religious rivalry with their disunity. It is the duty of the opposition parties to meet immediately and rescue Nigeria from this dangerous trend by sponsoring their own candidates which will reflect our diversity, and ensure equity, justice, and fairness in the distribution of elective posts.”
