“Kano Parents Rally Against Detention of #EndBadGovernance Protesters, Call for Their Immediate Release”
Parents of youths who were arrested during the recent #EndBadGovernance protests have held a demonstration at the Kano State House of Assembly, demanding justice and the immediate release of their children.Mallam Nura Ahmad, speaking on behalf of the parents, shared that around 70 young protesters had been detained and taken to Abuja, where they are reportedly facing harsh conditions.
#EndBadGovernance protests, held from August 1 to August 10 across Nigeria, were driven by public dissatisfaction with the economic struggles and hardships under President Bola Tinubu’s administration.
Ahmad expressed concern about the poor treatment the detainees are allegedly enduring, noting that they have been denied basic hygiene and are only receiving one meal a day since their arrest. The parents’ attempts to secure bail for their children have been met with several challenges, causing them growing frustration as they seek a solution.Another issue raised by the parents is the lack of access to legal representation for the detained youths.
Fatima Yusuf Umar, one of the mothers, shared her distress after her son told her in their last conversation that he was struggling with vision problems due to the mistreatment he had experienced while in custody. In response to the parents’ concerns, the Majority Leader of the Kano State Assembly assured them that the House would take action to push for bail.
He also called on the Attorney General and Minister of Justice to ensure the detainees’ rights are upheld and that they are granted bail.
