Imo Activist Nonso Nkwa Abducted Again by Gunmen
Chinonso Uba, also known as Nonso Nkwa, a well-known human rights activist and social commentator, was abducted by unidentified gunmen on Sunday evening. The abduction took place near the Teachers’ House along Port Harcourt Road in Owerri. When reporters tried to contact him after hearing about the incident, his phone was found to be switched off, further confirming the seriousness of the situation.
This marks the second time Nonso Nkwa, a radio host at Ozisa FM Owerri (owned by the Catholic Archdiocese of Owerri), has been kidnapped near the same spot, just after leaving the station, which is located on the premises of Assumpta Cathedral, also along Port Harcourt Road.
In recent days, Nonso Nkwa has been outspoken about the rising incidents of armed robbery and kidnapping in Imo State, warning the public and calling for action. He has also been critical of the extortion faced by youths in Imo State at the hands of security forces, particularly the police.
Additionally, he recently revealed how some alleged policemen defrauded Point of Sale (POS) operators of N2.5 million in Owerri and brought to light the suspected use of the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN) facility in Nsu, Ehime Mbano LGA, as an Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camp.
It is possible that those responsible for his abduction were unsettled by his bold and uncompromising stance on these issues.
