Governor Douye Diri Shares His Response After Giving a Public Lecture at the University of Nigeria, Enugu State
The Governor of Bayelsa State and prominent member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Douye Diri, shared his thoughts after delivering a public lecture at a university in Enugu State on Wednesday.In a statement posted on his verified Facebook page, Governor Diri reflected on his experience earlier in the day, where he addressed a gathering of distinguished academics at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, Enugu State.
He delivered the institution’s 64th Founder’s Day Lecture, titled “Rethinking our Future: The Need for True Federalism and Economic Renaissance.”He went on to explain that during the lecture, he expressed his concerns regarding the flaws in Nigeria’s current federal system.
He emphasized the discrepancies between how federalism is practiced globally and how it is implemented in Nigeria.Governor Diri highlighted key issues in his lecture, including the need for the Federal Government to devolve more powers to the states, the creation of state police, granting states the authority to establish local governments, electoral reforms, and giving states greater fiscal autonomy and control over their resources.
In his concluding remarks, Governor Diri clarified his strong support for the unity and continued existence of Nigeria. However, he acknowledged that every nation, including Nigeria, must work towards improving its union.
