EFCC Says VeryDarkMan Will Be Freed Once Bail Conditions Are Met

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has confirmed that popular social media activist Martins Otse, better known as VeryDarkMan (VDM), will be released once he fulfills his bail terms. Speaking to BBC News Pidgin, EFCC spokesperson Dele Oyewale stated, “We will release him if he meets his bail conditions, and we will take the case to court as soon as possible.”
VDM’s arrest followed several petitions from unnamed individuals alleging various forms of misconduct. Oyewale noted that the activist was taken into custody to respond to these accusations, though he refused to confirm whether Guaranty Trust Bank (GTBank) was among the complainants. “We arrested him to respond to a series of allegations raised against him by some petitioners,” he said, emphasizing that the identities of petitioners remain confidential.
The arrest, which happened in Abuja, has stirred public outcry and online backlash, with many accusing the EFCC of trying to suppress free speech. VDM is known for his outspoken critiques on social issues and public figures, making him a polarizing yet influential figure online.
Adding fuel to the controversy, VDM’s lawyer, Deji Adeyanju, alleged that his client was ambushed by EFCC agents at a GTBank branch. This raised suspicions about the bank’s role in the incident. However, GTBank denied any involvement, releasing CCTV footage to prove the arrest did not take place on their premises and calling for a transparent investigation.
On Monday, protesters gathered at GTBank’s Abuja headquarters, demanding VDM’s immediate and unconditional release. The demonstrators, holding placards and chanting, claimed the arrest was a violation of civil rights and an attack on freedom of expression.
As the legal battle unfolds, many Nigerians are watching closely to see how the EFCC manages the case. Supporters of VeryDarkMan continue to question the timing and nature of his arrest, insisting on fairness, accountability, and due process.
